Sunday in Quito

Another beautiful sunshiny day in the Ecuador's capital. Our last Sunday to explore Quito with Sarah. (Next weekend we are exploring the Quilatoa Loop - look forward to that!)

Sundays are good days to drive around Quito. There is hardly any traffic. We started with a trip up to the Military Museum, on the other side of the valley. We were rewarded with spectacular views over Quito and of Cotopaxi, the subject of yesterday's post.

Cotopaxi - a spectacular backdrop to South Quito.

The we wandered around Old Quito for several hours. Ole gets some incredible shots with his tele-lens.
These pods grow in the jungle. Inside there
are seeds covered with a soft flesh, that you
suck off the seed.

This is a flavored merengue that is served like an ice-cream cone.

This is pork skin - that has been deep-fried - a popular food here.

Buy an inflatable toy for your child?!
Then we visited the Basilica - and went to the very top.
Basilica at the end of this street is relatively new - built in 1988.
It dominates the skyline.

For $2 you can climb to the very top of the steeple and look out over
Quito. It was the scariest thing I have done in a very long time!!!

This would NOT be approved by any Canadian
or Danish Safety standards.

We climbed to the look-out in this steeple. The views were stunning.

Then, suddenly, we were rewarded by Cayambe showing above the clouds.
